How Georgians Get Their Natural Gas Service

The type of provider available to a customer depends on their location within the state. There are three primary types of natural gas providers that customers may encounter:

Investor Owned Local Distribution Company (LDC)

Liberty Utilities, the sole local distribution company in Georgia, operates under the full regulation of the Public Service Commission (PSC). Residents who live in an area served by Liberty Utilities do not have choice.

Natural Gas Marketers

Today, thirteen certified natural gas marketers provide service to customers within Atlanta Gas Light Company's territory and system. While the prices charged by these marketers are determined by the market, the PSC still regulates the rates for AGLC's distribution services. These areas do have the power to choose their natural gas provider.

Municipal Gas Systems

Additionally, there are 84 municipal gas systems in Georgia that supply natural gas to local residents. Unlike investor-owned local distribution companies, the prices for municipal gas services are not regulated by the PSC. Residents living inside of a municipal gas system territory will not have natural has choice.
